Hand To Hand Combat Training For Judo

Judo has been around since the late 19th century. It was first developed by Dr. Jigoro Kano, and it is a martial art that emphasizes hand to hand combat training. Judo was introduced as an Olympic Sport during the 1964 games. Many people all over the globe study Judo for exercise, self-protection, and as a competitive sport.

The following is a list of some common hand to hand combat training moves used in Judo. Many of these are taught in classes, online materials, and on self defense videos.

Unarmed Distance Attacks

Slanting Attack: To complete this attack, the attacker will step forward with his right foot and try to strike the left side of the defender’s head. This initial strike can be escaped by moving to the outside of the attacker’s advanced foot, turning to the right, and pushing down on the striking arm so that it misses the target. The next step is to counter with an uppercut and throat grab. This knocks the attacker off balance and opens up a strike to his right ear.

Thrust Punch: For this distance attack, the attacker steps and advances with his left foot while striking the his left fist. This punch is escaped by stepping away and following up with a counterattack to the attacker’s ribs. Then the defender uses a rear choke technique to force the attacker into submission. If the attacker does not submit, then the hold is maintained until attacker becomes unconscious.

Front Kick: In this hand to hand combat training maneuver, the defender avoids a right kick by turning his entire body to the right and taking a step back with his right foot. After that, he grabs the attacker’s raised foot with both hands. Twisting the foot at the ankle, he breaks it and the attacker is forced down and away.

Unarmed Close Combat Attacks

Two-Hand Hold: The attacker steps forward with his left foot and grabs each wrist, attempting to knee the defender in the groin. This is avoided by stepping back onto the left foot and forcing the hand against the attacker’s thumb. The grip is released and the attacker attempts a strike to the temple. At this point, the defender grabs the attacker’s wrist and twists to the right. The technique ends with and arm and list wristlock, which forces the attacker to submit or suffer a broken arm.

Rear Seizure Technique: In this move, the attacker again steps forward grabs the arms and body from behind. The defender responds by lifting shoulders and arms while stepping forcefully on the attacker’s foot. This will force the attacker to release his grasp. Then the defender will turn to his right and grab the wrist with his left hand. This lifts the right arm behind the elbow and pushes the arm of the attacker into a throw with continued motion.

Judo is comprised of many more techniques, all of which can be used to aid in self defense.

Reasons To Learn Self Defense

Self defense is important for individuals of any age or background, and there are several reasons why everyone should learn self defense in one form or another.

Let’s start with the obvious. You can learn to protect yourself and maybe even your loved ones in the event that someone tries to physically harm you. Every day you read horrible stories in the paper or see stories on the news about how someone else has been raped or assaulted. We all tend to think that these things won’t happen to us, but the truth is that we don’t know for sure. Being prepared is the smart thing to do.

The next reason you should learn self defense? Self-confidence. Research has indicated that people who enroll in self defense training experience a rise in their own self-confidence. There are a few reasons for this including an increase in physical activity which helps you tone muscle and lose weight. Plus, when you feel competent enough to defend an attacker, you gain a sense of self-assurance that spills over into other aspects of your life like your relationships and your career.

Decreased crime is another good reason to learn how to defend yourself. Did you know that people who are trained to defend themselves can actually prevent a crime from occurring in the first place? When you are aware of your surroundings and you walk confidently, you actually send signals to an attacker that you are not a good target. You reduce your chances of ever being the victim of a violent crime or assault.

Reduce stress and sleep better at night. Participating in physical activities can calm you down, reduce your blood pressure and help you sleep better every day which translates to a more energized and productive day for you.

Who Benefits from Training in Self Defense?

Men: Exercise is good for everyone. Reduce stress and find ways to build and strengthen your muscles with training in martial arts or other disciplines. Participate in a class as a way to socialize or spend quality time with your family.

Women: Women are often susceptible to sexual assault, and learning self defense can help you feel empowered and prevent you from becoming the next victim of rape or theft. The self-confidence you gain through your training program can help you in other areas of your life too.

Children: Children as young as four years old can participate in martial arts and other defensive training courses. It’s a great way to make friends, establish healthy exercise habits, and build self-esteem. In addition to physical training, self-defense programs can also help youth find effective ways to deal with anger, stress, and other threats like bullying and child predators.

Seniors: More and more assisted living facilities are teaching seniors how to defend themselves. It’s great for the mind and body, and it’s easy for recreation directors to set up classes as a routine part of their activities calendar. Modified techniques may be needed.

Buying A New Chartplotter?

If you’re somebody who is completely new to enjoying water sports, no doubt you’ve initiated some preliminary study on all the fantastic resources and gadgets that exist to assist you with boat routing while on the water. One particular gadget is known as chartplotter, like the Garmin GPS 152 for instance. Here, we are going to talk about exactly what a chartplotter is and the advantages to including one within your choice of equipment while at sea.

A chartplotter is a digital displayed marine navigational method that employs a GPS receiver to be able to show different electronic data, which might incorporate atlases, charts, tidal details and weather data as a few typical alternatives. The chartplotter system is very important because it allows anyone who is directing the boat to have the ability to continually be aware of his or her natural environment and placement on the water in accordance with other objects, motorboats as well as elements above and beneath the top of the sea.

A chartplotter might be associated with a GPS product and this is what allows the system to accurately exhibit your overall position on the water. GPS stands for global positioning system and it is based on a system associated with numerous satellites. The marine GPS models are used for placement much in the same manner as the GPS models which are popular inside motor vehicles on the freeways.

There are lots of basic functions that you need to be looking for when selecting your own Garmin 152, or a similar device. One of the first things that you really need to take a look at could be the characteristics of the display. Here you will want to consider the display size, color and readability in strong sunshine to name a few basics. Most monitors appear somewhere in the range of 5-12 inches and the most effective measurement for you personally would certainly mostly be determined by wherever you want to mount the unit within your vessel.

Chartplotters come with displays that are color or monochrome. This is largely a personal preference, but some people might pick the color screens if they are utilizing a chartplotter which also contains fishfinding capabilities. In this instance, the color option may allow you to much better determine the different fish and items because they would show up on your screen in different colors. Regarding the before mentioned Garmin 152 GPS, the screen is grayscale and this can be completely satisfactory for most people.

Additionally, you will clearly want to think about how well your screen will read in primary sunshine. Again, this does depend somewhat on where you want to install the navigational device in your vessel. Be sure that your screen is readily watchable in immediate natural light or you will find yourself stepping up to one that does because the stress might drive you nutty.

Be sure to furthermore take into consideration the types of mapping and graphs that you want to have the ability to incorporate within your model. Several are available pre-loaded with several maps and graphs, but additionally be sure to check the capacity to include additional mapping and other software that could further more suit your sailing requirements while you gain in experience at sea.

Mens Mountain Bike – Why The Need For A Different Edition For Women?

Recently I was reading a question about what the difference was between a mens mountain bike and a women’s mountain bike. Several people answered the question about this thing being a little different and that thing being a little bit different, etc. You know things like the handlebars, parts on the frame, grips, brake levers, etc. But one answer made a lot of sense. The answer said that a majority of women would purchase a mens mountain bike because the differences are very minor and there is a wider selection and there are many more choices of mens mountain bike versus women’s mountain bikes.

This totally made sense to me. Maybe at one time it might have made sense to make a more ‘girly’ bike for women, but even if these types of bikes currently exist, they don’t actually need to anymore. Women now days are every bit as competitive as most men and their physical agility, strength and dimensions are close to and match men in many regards. So why the necessity for two different types of bikes?

While it’s true that there are some women who are smaller than many men, the opposite is also true, that there are some men who are smaller than most women. In those cases, each of these people who are smaller in general will need to look for a bike that fits their individual size. The same for those that are bigger.

So it seems to me, that making bikes in different sizes to match the size of their rider is more important than trying to separate out the sexes. It’s time in our society and in our current environment to drop that separation. I think it would be much smarter for the mountain bike manufactures to focus on making bikes that are designed for different sized people, large, small, light, heavy, etc. That way you can have many different models in many different dimensions that will meet the needs of all people, no matter their sex.

Stay Protected With Bell Helmets

As a biker, safety must come first Morbidity has increased as, according to statistical research, more riders die yearly. This is why the Government drafted a law regarding the compulsory wearing a helmet. If you’re not going to wear helmet while biking, it is considered as an offense punishable by fine or imprisonment. Soon after they have implemented the law, the morbidity rate of riders dramatically decreased.

But, people also have their own opinions why they rather not wear helmets. There are still some debates going on about whether to wear or not to wear a helmet due to its advantages and disadvantages.

Helmets are, as far as its design is concerned, really useful. There are many brand names of helmets that are now out in the market. But, they are unlike Bell Helmets since this manufacturer is known worldwide to be the most trusted headgear and rider protector brand nowadays.

World class sport competitors and champions from X Games, Moto X, Grand Prix, marathons and racing contests opt to wear Bell Helmets over all of the other brands. For more than 50 years, Bell Helmets played a vital role in protecting sportsmen and women from different events.

Bell began as a small auto parts store in the heart of Los Angeles. It was managed by Roy Richter. Now, it has become the leading brand of safety equipment for biking, auto racing and the more lucrative motor racing.

Bell Helmets come in many variations, from cycling, skateboarding, Grand Prix, and motor cycling. But, whatever type of helmet it is, every helmet they make is one of a kind, especially with the design. They made it tougher, lighter and it has a much better ventilation system. It also comes with really awesome designs.

Bell Cycling Helmets are not just for the competitions. You can also use this equipment for daily use. Aside from its tough build and cool look, you can count on these helmets for daily protection when heading somewhere into the city. The good thing about this is that when you are wearing a Bell Helmet, it will boost your good looks because it is considered as a luxurious type of helmet.

In Self Defense, Practice Makes Perfect

In the world that we live in today, there is more of a need to learn self defense than ever before.  Kids deal with school bullying and out and out school violence in a way previous generations didn’t have to.  College campuses experience their own type of violence, which leads college age women to one-time rape clinics to learn self defense.

You get the picture.  The need is there; and as awareness increases that it is actually not as difficult to learn martial arts or self defense as one might think, more and more people will get into gear and take their personal safety seriously.

If you have even the slightest interest in learning self defense or martial arts, you are already moving in the right direction.  Both arts have a lot to offer.  When you learn martial arts, you gain confidence and focus.  You learn about your energy and about your body.  In martial arts, you can also learn how to control your mind better.   The same is true of self defense; but the way you train your mind is different.  When you engage in a martial arts class or self defense class, you also gain fitness.  In most types of martial arts classes, you will spend at least some time sparring with a partner.  While some may be more intense than others (such as Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu), the point remains that martial arts provides you with some great exercise.

The thing to keep in mind when you learn self defense or martial arts is your reasons for learning in the first place.  If your main goal is just to have something to do to pass the time; a way to get some exercise, then this may not be quite as important.  If, however, you have taken up a self defense class for the true purpose of learning to defend yourself against an attack, then the issue of practice takes on a whole new level of importance.

When you learn self defense or martial arts for defense sake, it is important that you practice (spar), and practice a lot.  It is also important to practice with as many different partners as you can.  The reason for this is simple.  The more people you practice with, the better you will get.  Every person responds differently to your body movements.  Each person has a different body makeup and that alone gives you better perception and gets you out of your comfort zone.

If you were to practice with the same partner time and time again, your sparring might as well be a dance that you perform; like the waltz.  Just as with dance partners, sparring partners who get accustomed to one another can fall into the rut of knowing exactly what will come next.  You will know how your partner will respond if you grab his throat; and he will know what you will do if he grabs you from behind.

In self defense, you want to always stay on your toes.  You never know what a true attack will look like; and more practice makes you better prepared for whatever may come.

The Power Of Visualization In Self Defense

When you think about learning self defense, you may initially feel overwhelmed.  There are many different kinds of self defense to choose from.  There is martial arts self defense; there are self defense DVD programs; there is reality based self defense.  The list really goes on and on.  The thing you have to keep in mind is your ultimate goal.  Are you just looking to get fit (in which case, martial arts self defense is great)?  Are you looking to really take your personal safety in your own hands and make sure you can face any situation (in which case, you want something reality based and brutally intense)?

Once you have chosen the program that is right for your lifestyle, personality, and goals; you’re well on your way.  When you first begin a martial arts self defense program – or any self defense program really – your motivation is very high.  You are being challenged and learning things that have meaning in your life.  There is nothing like a great self defense program to give you confidence in yourself!  Even self defense DVD programs that allow you to learn and practice at home give you valuable tools.

Here’s a tip to help you gain as much knowledge and know-how as possible:  revert back to your childhood and let your imagination flow.  That’s right, daydreaming can be oh so good for your progress in mastering martial arts self defense.   Scientifically, we are visual beings.  Our minds picture all sorts of things every single day; how we will look wearing that new jacket; what traffic will look like on the way to work or school.  When it is time to give that presentation or ask for that promotion, our mind will picture how we will look and what we will say.  The smart mind will go so far as to imagine a favorable outcome too!

The science behind visualization has been studied for decades; beginning back in the 1930’s with neuro-muscular researcher Edmund Jacobson.  In the initial research, it was found that there are parts of our brains and nervous systems that cannot tell the difference between something that is really happening and that which is well imagined and visualized.  This principle is also used to support the Law of Attraction; but that’s a whole different story.  The point is that visualization has a lot of power to help you control that which happens in your life.

Thinking in terms of your martial arts self defense or fighting techniques; visualization can play a huge role in how you respond in a real life situation.  For this reason, it is good to allow yourself the time to daydream a little; to see yourself holding off a would-be assailant; to see yourself disarming a bad guy wielding a knife.  A safe outcome to a dangerous situation is possible, and if you spend time imagining your responses to specific scenarios – such as a grab from behind – you are more likely to react quickly and hit your mark when you do throw that punch or kick.

Daydreaming can do a lot for you when you learn to harness the power of visualization and focus it on your self defense techniques.  Obviously, this all goes hand in hand with practice and hard work; but including visualization increases your skill significantly.
